Pet Door - It is an Automatic Gate Keeper For Your Cat! Thursday, December 23, 2010

No one wants to be a gate keeper for their car or dog, that's why a pet door was made. A pet door is a fixed up frame, set into a wall, window, or a door with a hinged flap to enable your pets to move out or in, on their own, without bothering you and you are free from those messy litter boxes, ruined carpets, and of course the night-time trips to let your pet out.

Many kinds are available for different pets with simple or more advanced features. The cost depends on the features but one can always have an access to this magic even with a few bucks. The lowest range just lies under twenty dollars while the more fancy or high- tech gadget could run several hundreds in cost.

The simplest pet door is a weighted flap, but now days they also come with magnets so as to have a good hold and to prevent opening by a strong wind. One-side access options are also available that allow only single side movement for the pets. The other variety comes in way of Electromagnetic ones, which can detect the matching magnet on the collar of pet so as to ensure only authorized entry. Infra red rays based or transparent flaps are just few other varieties from large kinds available. The pet door concept though is not a new one but the advancements in this product do pace with present time. With more popularity this selection also emerges with new features making its functioning better and easier then before.

A few things should be considered when deciding which pet door is best for you, issues like frames, material used, color to match your main one or window where it is to be installed, security levels desired, budget and the seals available as poor quality in this regard can hamper processes like climate control. The reflection should be not only your love for the pet but also your fashion.

The one you get should be in accordance with the size of your pet so to allow him easy entry. For this, measure the pet's body at its widest as well as the proper height and then add few inches to both measurements to have perfect fit.

Installation of a pet door is not the hard one, all of them should come with full installation instructions and it is important to follow the steps exactly. But if something that you do find difficult then you could always get someone to install it for you. This should not take long and should not be too expensive.

Last but not the least, having a pet door is not all. You have to train your pet to use it to keep you away from the boring work of a gate keeper. When your pet finally does go through it, don't forget to reward them and make it fun, this way your pet will be happy to use it and you can both enjoy the benefits. A smart pet never bother its master.

Advantages of Installing a Pet Flap in a New UPVC Door Friday, December 17, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When purchasing products that you have to live day to day with you don't want settle for second best, why not go the extra mile and have a Staywell system pre-fitted within a new UPVC back door. The advantages the Staywell system delivers are the quality and the ability to repair and replace components within the system allowing a greater lifespan to last with the back door. More and more people are requesting a cat or dog flap system within exterior back doors.

Pet doors offer great flexibility for you and your pets, using the correct system allows pet's very easy access to and from the home allowing you more freedom. If using a magnetic or infrared system this will allow only your pets to come and go freely throughout the day. Also the systems will allow you to lock the doors allowing your pets to remain safe and secure within the home when you want them to stay in, allow your pet in but not out or allow your pet out but not in.

Both the infra-red and the magnetic systems have collars with colour coded tags on, these tags allow only cats with the correct tag to use the door, keeping out unwanted intruders. If you need to order a replacement tag you will need to know the tag colour you require.

Pet doors within a UPVC back door allow you to have a clean finish with a plastic long life span which all goes together beautifully and is easy to wipe clean. Another advantage of these doors is to eliminate the use of litter trays which create unpleasant pet mess which in the long run makes life cheaper as it removes the cost of tray litters and litter.

Having a dog or cat flap fitted by a professional at the time the UPVC door is manufactured reduces installation errors and problems.

Do it Yourself - Build a Rabbit Hutch Tuesday, October 19, 2010

People keep all different kinds of animals for pets. They do so for delight, companionship or just to acquire a feeling of responsibility and to care for something. Some pets serve other purposes such as defending homes and property and eliminating pests. Cats, dogs, fish and birds are the most popular pets but nearly any animal can be a pet providing it is not an endangered species.

One animal that can make an ideal pet is the rabbit. They can be kept in a hutch both inside and outdoors or allowed to roam free. However, it is recommended to keep them inside where they are protected from predators and severe temperatures. If you are a pet lover and want to own a rabbit you will require a suitable hutch to accommodate it. You can either purchase one or make one by yourself. Follow the guidelines below to construct your own cage that can hold up to three rabbits comfortably.

Required Materials:

24" x 96" Chicken wire
2 door hinges
Hook and eye latch
2 sheets ply board 24" x 72" x 3/4 "
8 pieces of 2" x 4" wood that are 8-foot in length
2 1" x 2" boards that are 6-foot in length
Nails

Required Tools:

Wire cutter
Pliers
Screwdriver
Hammer
Measuring tape
Handsaw

Instructions:

1. Use the handsaw to cut 4 pieces of 2" x 4" wood to 48" long. Cut 8 pieces 24" long.

2. Use the hammer to nail a 48" piece to 24" piece in the shape of an 'L'. The boards must be joined so that 4" are left on both the right and left sides of the 24" piece.

3. Nail the end of the 48" piece to the 24" piece.

4. Attach a next piece of 48" wood to the opposite side of the 24" wood to make a 'U'.

5. Nail a second piece of 24" wood to the last 2" of the 48" wood to form a rectangular frame.

6. Place the frame on the workbench with one 48" board in front of you while the 24" boards facing away from you.

7. Nail a 24" board to each corner of the frame. The board should point toward the ceiling. Nail the board in order that the 4" widths face you from each corner.

8. Nail a 48" board between the 24" board that face you so that the upright rectangle that is facing you will be identical to the one on the work area.

9. Repeat the same process to the opposite side.

10. Nail a piece of 24" board on the top of the 24" inch boards that are positioned upright.

11. Turn over the object and do the same repeat.

12. Using handsaw cut two 2-foot square pieces of the plywood.

13. Nail them to the square ends of the hutch. Nails must be close to ensure it is secure.

14. Saw a rectangular piece of plywood and nail to cover the rear. Cover all sides with ply board.

15. Use wire cutter and cut a piece of the chicken wire and nail it to half the front of the hutch.

16. Cut a piece of ply board to the other half and screw the hinges to it and to the cage to make a door.

17. Screw the hook and eye latch to the door.

18. Turn the cage over and nail 48" 2" x 4"s to form the legs.

Tips:

Paint the hutch if you want a more appealing look.

Ensure that the legs are the same in length.

PetSafe Medium Plastic Pet Door, Premium White Tuesday, October 12, 2010

PetSafe Medium Plastic Pet Door, Premium White Review

it's not the top of the line but it was easy to install although you need to be sure to tape the edge of the line to prevent scratches with a jig saw. The cat was used to it within a few days. I got a small one which is big enough for the cat and too small for the dog.

The only thing I didn't like is the snap on hard cover to "lock" it off. A little cumbersome to put it on and off. If not on just right the cat can push it open so it has to snap on real tight.

all in all, another good Petsafe product.

PetSafe Medium Plastic Pet Door, Premium White Feature

  • High-impact pet door lets your dog or cat go in and out as it pleases
  • Durable plastic frame includes secure closing panel
  • Great for pets up to 40 pounds
  • Complete assembly instructions included
  • Flexible transparent panels push open easily

PetSafe Medium Plastic Pet Door, Premium White Overview

This durable plastic pet door gives you and your furry pal the freedom you both deserve. The soft, flexible transparent panels are safe and easy for your dog to push open so he can let himself out - and back in. The panels can also keep drafts and insects out of your home.

Finding a Window Pet Door

For renters or for people who do not want to put holes in their door or in their walls, the pet product industry has come up with the best solution ever. Put the pet door in a window!

Window pet doors are fairly easy to install. This is especially true is you have what is called a sash window, one that raises up and down. Most pet doors for windows have adjustable sides so they will fit snuggly into the window. They are made of clear materials so your view out is less obstructed.

We found some good tips when it comes to installing a pet door in your window:

1) First you must remove the screen. Store it someplace where it can lay flat. Under a bed may work, or under your washer or dryer if it will fit.

2) Next, raise the sash all the way up and measure the width inside the track. Then you will know which pet door to choose. You want a window pet door that will adjust to the dimensions of your window and fit securely.

3) If you purchase a pet door which has a cover that locks into place, remember it slides down from the top, so you need to make sure you have enough clearance to do this. An easy way is to measure the opening of the window pet door you are thinking of purchasing and double that measurement. Then compare that to the measured length of the window where you want it installed.

 4) Finally, check to see if your window is single pane or doubled pane. If you live in a newer home or an area where the weather can get extreme, you probably have double paned glass. Your best bet will be to buy a dual pane window pet door. Make sure to measure the depth of your window first. You don't want the window pet door to stick out further than the window.

Here are two ways to still "lock" your window. You can easily place a wood screw just above the window into either side of the tracks. Or if you still want to open the window from time to time, cut two small wooden dowels and wedge them in the tracks when the window is closed.

You can get a pet door for small animals that can be installed directly into the glass. Unless you are used to cutting glass, it would be wise to take the window pane to a professional who has the proper tools to install your window pet door. If you have tempered glass (the kind that has a little "bug" called an indicia in the corner) you won't be able to cut it. Even modern casements have tempered glass. One way around this is to replace the glass with a material that looks like glass but can be cut and drilled into with ease. It is called Lexan. Just make sure it is scratch resistant and at least 3/16 thick.
